Life Isn’t Always Smooth Sailing

The symptoms of trauma manifest themselves differently for everyone, and one person’s experience may be nothing like your own. But what we do know is that trauma is a distressing ordeal that some people struggle to bounce back from.

Among the various types of traumas we address, we focus on "Big T" traumas, which include generational trauma, significant losses, and childhood abuse, all of which can leave deep emotional scars.

On the other hand, "little t" traumas encompass chronic stressors such as ongoing discrimination, unrealistic standards of self-worth, perinatal and postnatal challenges, and relationship challenges. These smaller yet persistent experiences can accumulate over time, leading to heightened anxiety and mental health issues.

Regardless of the type of trauma you endured, you may be experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty enjoying life or being present in the moment

  • Living in fight-or-flight mode

  • Feelings of guilt and shame

  • Haunted by intrusive thoughts and flashbacks

  • Loneliness and isolation

You’ve probably also been experiencing physical symptoms such as:

  • Chronic pain

  • Exhaustion and fatigue

  • Anxiety and Depression

  • Changes in appetite

  • Digestive issues

Trauma therapy can help you process these unresolved, difficult experiences you’ve had to endure and provide you with the means to truly let go and heal from deep within.

Most Women Will Experience Trauma In Their Lifetime

Trauma is, unfortunately, quite common for women worldwide. Regardless of age, culture, or economic background, many women carry the weight of trauma in various forms. Trauma is a shared aspect of the female experience, and understanding this can help break the stigma surrounding it and allow women to realize they are not alone in their struggles.

The Rhetoric That Women Should Always Be Able To “Handle It All” Is Damaging

Societal pressures can greatly influence a woman’s experience of trauma. The expectation to excel in both a demanding career and motherhood can lead to feelings of overwhelm, distress, and inadequacy.

High-achieving women also encounter relentless demands in the workplace, especially in male-dominated environments, where they feel the need to constantly prove themselves.

Additionally, postpartum challenges are frequently minimized in today’s society, leaving many women feeling isolated and unsupported. Social media exacerbates these struggles by promoting unrealistic ideals of what motherhood and success should look like, while the cultural stigma surrounding mental health discourages many from seeking the help they need especially when they feel they can’t balance so many roles at once.

When you’re struggling with your mental health, it’s okay to seek help—and it is okay to want to feel better. Trauma therapy helps you process your experiences and provides you with avenues for real growth and healing.

Trauma Therapy Can Help You Regain Control Of Your Life

During sessions, you will be met with a safe, trusting, and supportive environment where you can unburden your heart and mind from all the thoughts and emotions you’ve kept pent up for so long.

Your therapist will begin with a comprehensive assessment to gain insight into your unique experiences with trauma, challenges, and mental health symptoms. This process involves exploring current stressors, emotional struggles, and any past trauma, while also considering your personal values, aspirations, and support systems.

The Brighter Thinking Therapy Approach To Trauma Treatment

We use various modalities to help women heal from unresolved traumas, these include:

Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitization (EMDR) Therapy for trauma addresses attachment issues that can lead to unhealthy relationships and trust issues by reprocessing negative beliefs and shifting towards healthier patterns. It’s especially beneficial for mothers, who often face complex feelings of guilt and self-doubt.

EMDR helps identify these challenges and reframes negative experiences, promoting a more positive self-image. Many moms struggle with limiting beliefs like "I'm not a good mom," shaped by societal expectations or traditional gender roles—EMDR can help challenge these incorrect, perfectionist views, fostering healthier self-esteem and empowerment in both personal and professional realms.

Additionally, this modality supports emotional regulation by teaching self-regulation skills in structured phases, enabling you to respond more calmly to triggering situations and navigate life's challenges with greater ease.

SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals are another method that your therapist will introduce during trauma therapy to help you effectively set realistic short and long term goals.

During therapy, we’ll also focus on self-care practices that help you build a routine that supports your well-being. This includes recognizing how your body responds to certain emotions and learning techniques such as breathing exercises, tapping, and self-regulation tools. We’ll also explore creating a self-soothing kit with items like fidget toys, calming scents like essential oils, and ice packs to help you manage your feelings better. By understanding what your body is experiencing, you’ll gain the skills you need to soothe and regulate your emotions.

Stress management incorporates techniques like meditation, guided meditation, and grounding exercises to help you find balance and calm.

Additionally, social support is vital, so we’ll discuss connecting with women’s groups, mom groups, and resources like the Postpartum Alliance (a significant non-profit organization dedicated to supporting mothers). These connections provide invaluable resources and a sense of community.

Trauma counseling can help you to get in touch with the person you once were, have a renewed sense of purpose, and, most importantly, heal from the pain of the past that has kept you feeling hopeless for so long. Lasting healing is possible, and you no longer have to carry the weight of trauma on your own.

Perhaps You Are Considering Trauma Therapy But Still Have Some Questions…

I had a bad experience with a therapist before, and I'm afraid of being judged or misunderstood.

I completely understand your concerns and want you to feel safe and supported from the very beginning. That’s why I offer a free 10-minute video consultation where we can discuss any questions or worries you might have. As a client-centered therapist, I prioritize building a genuine connection. If it turns out I’m not the right fit for you, I’m more than happy to help you find someone who can better meet your needs.

I’ve tried therapy before, and nothing changed. How will this be any different?

I hear you and want you to know that therapy with me is a collaborative, non-judgmental journey where your voice truly matters. I specialize in supporting women, especially mothers, who are dealing with anxiety, trauma, or postpartum challenges. I understand how overwhelming these experiences can be. My approach is eclectic and tailored to your individual needs—whether that involves EMDR for processing trauma or solution-focused strategies to address immediate stressors. My aim is to create a compassionate space where we can work together toward meaningful change.

I’m worried about the cost of therapy.

It’s completely valid to think about the financial aspect of therapy. I see it as an investment in your mental well-being, with benefits that extend far beyond our sessions. The skills and insights you gain can positively impact your life for years to come, helping you manage current challenges and enhance your overall quality of life. I offer flexible scheduling and am committed to working with you to create a plan that aligns with your budget and needs. Your well-being is worth it.
